Namchi - A Retreat In South Sikkim

Another wonderful spot at South Sikkim is Namchi at 5000 Ft. From here you can experience the spendid view of Kanchenjunga peak. On our way to Namchi from Ravangla we halted at Temi tea garden. Lush green view of tea garden on both sides of the road was just wonderful. Samdruptse Temple is 7 km from Namchi with a 135 Ft huge statue of Padmasambhaba. The road 400 meter we had to walk to reach the temple was misty and heavenly.



Namchi Rock Garden is also admirable. 14 km from Namchi is Damthang, from where you can reach Tendong Peak by 9 km trek. Tendong Peak is actually a dead volcano. From here along with the beautiful snow peaks you can not only see the Peling but also the Planes of Siliguri at the same time.



Ale ground, presently known as Baichung Stadium is 3 minutes walk from the Samudraptse Hotel. Ale Monastery you can also see nearby. Little away from here is 'Char Dham', a new temple complex built on 26 acres of land. You can visit the famous temples from all over India in one place here in Namchi!



See Jagannath Temple of the East, Dwarka from the West, Badrinath from the North and Rameshwar Temple from South India in a common temple complex. You will be wondered by seeing the 110Ft statue of Shiva and a 20 Ft statue of Kirateshwar.

You can go up to helipad, 5 Km from the Chardham temple complex and experience the wonderful sunset from there. On the way to helipad see Jalkanya temple and Sain Temple.

Don't miss the Namchi Hat ( Temporary market) if you are there on Sunday. The timing is 8 am to 5 pm on Sundays.

How to reach Namchi:

You can reach Namchi 100 Km from Siliguri or, New Jalpaiguri, nearest railway station by car @ INR 1500. Namchi can also be reached from Gangtok or, Peling via Ravangla, which is 26 Km from Namchi.

Possibly the best and of course costliest place to stay here is Seven Hill Resort. This resort is 4 km from the Namchi Mall at Kalidhara. On the way to the resort you will cross the residence of the Chief Minister of the state and his personal nursery. On the top of the hill the motor able road ends. You will be taken to the resort by two very energetic horses! You will reach the beautiful cottages of the resort riding on them on a hilly road. Borong - A Less Known Place In South Sikkim

This is a heavenly place for nature lovers. If you want to experience exquisite grandeur of mighty Himalayas from a serene place you can surely bet on Borong.

Only 17 km from Ravangla situated at 5800 Ft. Borong has only one place to stay, the cottages of Wild Flower Retreat. The cottages are beautifully within the trees on the steps of the hill.


Himalayan Pheasants, blue and black magpie, scarlet minivet and so many colorful birds are there to welcome you in their empire. The only sound you will listen there are the chirps of them. The view of mighty snow peaks Narsingh, Pandim and Sinolchu will mesmerize you throughout the day.

Maenam peak is also trekkable from Borong and take less time than from Ravangla. Another very nice place to tek from here is Bhanjan valley. Lush green carpet decorated with tiny colorful flowers in between and the fascinating Himalayan peaks in front of you, a breath taking experience.



New and Old Ralong Monasteries are also very near to Borong just 5 Km. You can hire a car to see the places near by like Gurang Monastery, Barmely Bridge, Famtam village, Silver falls etc. Walk 3 Km up to Borong hot fountain. It will take only one hour to reach this hot fountain in the bank of Rangit river. A festival is held in February each year.

How to reach Borong:

Nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri. From New Jalpaiguri / Siliguri a car may be hired, which will drop you to Borong via Ravangla. The distance is 150 Km. The fare of car at present @INR 2500 - 2800.

You can come to Singtam or, Jorthang from Siliguri bus stand by shared car and from there to Borong to save money.

Borong can also be approached from Gangtok, Peling or, Rinchengpong. The car fare from these places @ INR 1500 - 2000.

Ravangla - In South Sikkim

Ravangla is a small township in south Sikkim nestled at the base of Mainam mountain at 6700 Ft. This small place is very lively with plenty of hotels and colorful shops. The view of Pandim, Narsingh and Sinolchu peaks are breathtaking.



We trekked 12 Km for four hours to reach Mainam Peak. The view of Kanchenjangha and other peaks are even better from here. There is a monastery also in the Mainam peak. One can trek to Bhaledunga mountain only half Km from here and will take half hour.

Next day we hired a car to see the beautifully decorated Ralong monastery, Temi tea garden, Tibetian handicrafts center etc on the way to Namchi, our next destination. These palces are within 20 km from Ravangala.

How to reach Ravangla:

Nearest railway station to Ravangla is New Jalpiguiri. From New Jalpiguri Ravangla is 130 Km. We hired a full car from New Jalpauguri, that charged us INR 2000.

One can reach Ravangla by shared taxi also @ INR 200 - 250 per head from New Jalpaiguri / Siliguri.

From Gangtok Ravangla is 66 Km and the fare of a car @ INR 1200 - 1500.

Lachung Yumthang Lachen Gurudongmar Lake

We visited almost whole of Sikkim in 2006 April. I will write in parts. This is about North Sikkim. While traveling through this area of Sikkim, the feeling was, there cannot be anything beautiful than this in this world. We were dumb stuck!

Yumthang:

Also known as Valley of flower of the East is a fabulous place to travel. In March and April the valley is full of different colors of Rhododendrons, Primula and in winter the valley is fully ice covered. We had a car with us to travel all the parts of Sikkim and was sponsored by one of my friends in Sikkim, he also arranged the accommodation for us :) But a car can also be hired from Gangtok on daily basis to travel Sikkim. Permits, where required will be arranged by the travel agents. See at the end of the post the package tariffs and other information.

Started early in the morning from Gangtok we crossed Fodong, Mangan, Singik to reach 135 Kms from Gangtok, Chungthang, where to streams Lachung chu from Lachung and Lachen chu from Lachen meets and make the famous Teesta. Chu means river streams in the local language. The scenic beauty of the route was awesome and the road is extemely well maintained. Usually tourists don't stop at Chungthang. They proceed further to Lachung to stay overnight before Yumthang. But my friend managed our accomodation at Chungthang, so we stayed there. Chungthang is a very small place with few shops and houses and some restaurants. From here two roads, one goes to Yumthang to Lachung and the other via Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake.

Next day morning we start from Chungthang for Yumthang, our next destination. The first halt was Lachung. I fell in love at first sight! What a place to stay! A picturesque natural village having a river, snow peak mountains, A water falls, plenty of colorful

 

flowers...what more one can ask for a landscape! We had our lunch in a
a local home. In fact most the residential
houses there are convreted hotels and restaurants at one part of it. The lady and the daughters quickly cooked food for all of us. We relished the fresh hot rice and the egg curry they made. It is the warmth and affection that matters how the food will taste!

After lunch we proceeded for Yumthang 24 kms from Lachung at 11800 ft. It is very difficult to describe the beauty of Yumthang. The time we went It was full of flowers. Colorful flowers were there even in between the grasses. The valley, river, snowpeaks, flowers even a hot spring is there! Enjoy the photos of Yumthang here.

Interested tourists can proceed further 24 Kms at 15300 Ft to Yumesemdong near Tibet Border.

24 Kms From Lachung, another place of interest is Katao at 12600 Ft, is famous for the glacier.

Gurudongmar Lake:



Again came back to Chungthang to go to our next destination Gurudongmar lake. We halted at Lachen 29 kms from Chungthang for the night. We had to start very early in the next morning, otherwise the driver told the weather will be bad. From Lachen in 3 hours we rached another beautiful village, the last village in this route, Thangu at 14400ft. Interested tourists can tek to Chopta valley from Thangu. The character of the mountains change abruptly to barren and rocky after Thangu. The whole road through the ice is mainatained by Indian Army. There are many check posts on the route.

The road ends at Gurudongmar Lake at 17800 Ft. This lake is very sacred for both hindus and Budhhists.We were mesmerized by the divine beauty! The whole lake is surrouded by icy mountains. The color of the water is turquish blue to greenish at places. The migratory birds floating here and there inthe lake...I don't have words to describe the place. Please visit it will be your lifetime memory.

Package Tours:

There are many travel agents in Gangtok to choose from.

The package cost includes food, stay and travel. There will be 8 to 10 tourists per car.

• 1 night 2 days package to Yumthang and Katao INR 1200 - 1500 per head.
  
• 2 nights 3 days package to Yumthang and Gurudongmar INR 2500 - 3000 per head.
  

Important points to note while you travel:

• Take enough heavy woolen garments. These places are vey cold.
  
• If babies are with you take their tinned milk from Gangtok.
  
• Carry common medicines, antiemetics may be required any time.
  
• Keep stock of enough mineral water in your car.
  
• Though rare, high altitude sickness may occur. If someone develop breathing trouble don't panic just bring him down to lower altitude as fast as you can.
  
• Electricity is absent or irregular in most of these places. keep the batteries of you gadgets properly charged.

Peling

At 6800 Ft. in West Sikkim Peling is very popular to the tourists. World's third highest peak Kanchenjunga can be viewed beautifully from here. Peling has three parts upper middle and lower. You can reach here by car from Gangtok or, NJP. It is 120- 130 Km drive from both the places.

The places to see from Peling are 300 years old Pemanyangtse Monastery, Khechiperi Lake, Rimbi and Change Falls. These place can be covered in one day by hiring a car locally. You can also visit Yoksum, the first capital of Sikkim situated at a distance of 34 Km. from here.

From Yoksum trek to Jongri and Gochala, which can be your dream experience of life.Moutain peaks are so close from here, it seems that you can touch them!

In the north of Peling, Singshor bridge, second highest bridge in Asia is about 30 Km from Peling can be visited if you have spare time. From here only you can go to the beautiful village Te. From this spot there are many famous trek route starts.

Rinchenpong

A picturesque place in West Sikkim, at 5500 Ft altitude, recently becoming very popular for its peace and exotic natural beauty. The place is not yet crowded with tourists. It is only 40 Km from another famous tourist spot Peling.

The Himalayan peaks Kanchenjangha, Kabru, Rathong, Koktang and Kumbhakarna are visible nicely from here. Nearby places to visit from here are Rinchengpong Monastery, Heritage house, Poison lake.

You can walk to Risham Monastrey at 6300 Ft. from here and fill your heart with the eternal beauty around it.

Rinchengpong is 135 Km. from both Gangtok or NJP Railway station. You can hire a car from the respective places to reach here. The fare will be around INR 2000.

Scarcity of hotels are there at present. Hotel Rinchengpong nest, Hotel Narla, and hotel Mount View (+91 3595 245248) are worth mentioning. Tariff varies between INR 1000 to 1200.

More information of travelling to Gangtok, Tsangu and Nathu La

Reach New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri by train, which is well connected from throughout the country. Otherwise reach Bagdogra the nearest Airport.
Hire a car for Gangtok from NJP or Siliguri the fare range is INR 1500 - 1600.
The fare to Nathu La from Gangtok is also about INR 1600.
Many travel agents are available who will do the permits and other formalities for you

For accommodation in Gangtok you can choose from wide range of hotels. The cheapest available will be at INR 600/ day.

Tsangu Lake and Nathu La

Only 48 Km. from Gangtok and they are with their amazing beauty waiting for you there! You will gain more than 9000 Ft in 56 km route by a car you can hire from Gangtok.

Tsangu lake is at a height of 12,400 Ft and 34 Km. from Gangtok. Throughout whole year the area surrounding lake remain covered with ice. In winter lake is also frozen to ice. You can walk around the lake and if you want or your kid can enjoy the yak ride. There are many shops and restaurants beside the lake. Though the quality of the food may not be up to the standard but will satisfy your hunger. Price is reasonable if you consider getting service at that remote place.

A little away from Tsangu lake there is Baba temple. It was built in the name of Baba Harbhajan Singh, a soldier who was killed in the war with China. It is heard that his spirit is still there and help the soldiers working there!

It is better if you choose your day of journey on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, as the permit to visit Nathu la are given only on those days.

Nathu la is at 14.450 Ft altitude. The whole route of journey is breath taking. You have to drive through the ice, beautiful lakes in between. This is the border of India and China. Take photographs,which is allowed now! Shake your hands with China soldiers. Greet Indian army and think of the hardship they ate doing, away from their families, protecting the country border.

Gangtok

It is the capital of Sikkim located at a height of 5500 ft. It is 125 Km. from the New Jalpaiguri Station. Nearest airport is Bagdogra. This is a very colorful town full restaurant, cafeteria, curio shop.Enche monastery is situated inside the town itself. Each year in the month of January Mask Dance "Cham" is held.

You can see the whole town on rope way. The rope way route is from Deorali Bazar up to Secretariat Building. You can hire a car and see the town and surroundings.

The most beautiful place to see is Roomtek monastery. It is 24 Km from the main city. Made on 1917 this monastery has many murals based on Buddhist Religion. On this route itself you can see Rangka gumfa and the small villages Sang and Tintale.

Apart from these Chogial Palace, Institute of Tibetology, orchid house, deer park, botanical garden, Saramsa garden are the places worth visiting.

You can view Kanchenjunga and Sinolchu from the view points Tashi, Hanuman Tak, Ganesh Tak.

Another place you can see is Fambong Lo reserve forest, which is only 25 Km from the city. Red panda, beer, barking deer can be seen in this forest. Rhododendrons and rare orchids are also plenty.

Sikkim

Literal meaning of Sikkim is “Happy Home”. In real sense also it is so because of its peaceful political situation and exceptional natural beauty.

In the year 1975 on 26^th April Sikkim became part of India as a state. On its north there is Tibet and east Tibet and Bhutan. On the West there is Nepal. Thus it has immensely important state for security purpose. The importance is enhanced following starting of business through Nathula Pass with China. On its south there is Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

On one side of Sikkim you can see the most beautiful peaks of Himalayas like Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Narsingh, Kabru, Rathong, Sinolchu etc and on the other side lakes at high altitude like gurudongmar, Tsangu, Khechiperi lakes with their heavenly beauties.
