Dehradun


Shivalik range at north, Yamuna valley on the west and valley of Ganges at east, Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand, one of the famous cities in India. Distance from Haridwar is 52 km.

According to Mahabharata the archery school / ashram of Guru Dronacharya was here in Dehradun and the 'Doon' term came from Drona! At present Indian military Academy is situated here.




To see places in Dehradun, it is better to hire a car or, auto rickshaw for the whole day. You will see Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple 5 km from the city on the bank of the Tamsa river. This temple is within a cave, and water from a natural fountain is continually dropping on the Shiva Lingam, hence the name Tapkeshwar. Tapak means dropping in Hindi. Other places worth visiting are Sahasradhara, Khalsi deer park on the slope of Shivalik hill 10 km from the city. See Doon School, Tapovan Ashram, Lakshman Sidh Temple, Sirdi Sai Temple, Chandraboni, Indian Forest Research Institute, Dehradun Church etc.
